SUMMARY:Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary Adventures
DESCRIPTION:Join marine biologist David McGuire on a unique exploration into the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary\, observing\, photographing and recording marine wildlife from seabirds to whales\, and maybe even a great white shark! We lead these unique trips each Sharktober when the white sharks return from their amazing migration of nearly 5000 miles round trip to forage in our National Marine Sanctuary. As part of NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary White Shark Stewardship program\, we collect data using photographs and encourage our guests to add observations on whales\, seabirds and white sharks as community scientists while educating the public on the importance of white sharks and all life in the ocean. \nThese unique natural history trips to the Devil’s Teeth\, (the Island of the Great White Shark) focus on the history\, geology\, policy and biology of the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary\, California Marine Protected Areas and the San Francisco Bay. We only book in the fall months of Sharktober (TM) when the white sharks return and the weather is clement for our passengers and students. We focus on shark conservation and the health of the entire marine ecosystem in our sanctuary. Although we will watch whales and seabirds\, and seek sharks- these trips are conservation and outdoor marine education. These are not specifically shark watching or diving trips- but we often see sharks! \n  \nABOUT THESE EXPEDITIONS These events are surface wildlife viewing on the US Coast Guard inspected vessel\, the AMIGO\, departing from San Francisco near the Fisherman’s Wharf. Fish and Wildlife Regulations prohibit landing in the Refuge\, but we visit state marine refuges and the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. \nDates 09/27\, 10/4\, (no trip 10/11)\, 10/18. 10/25\, 11/1\, 11/8 \nMore details and information here. \nNote: Trips are weather dependent. Please read details on routing\, cancellation and the refund policy on the booking site. \nThese trips are not affiliated with The Earth Island Institute.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 10\, 10 am: Aquatic Park\, Berkeley’s Waterfront\, walking tour led by David McGuire\n\nShark Stewards (a project of the Earth Island Institute) at Aquatic Park.\nJoin marine biologist David McGuire\, director of the non-profit Shark Stewards\, on a walking tour around Berkeley’s Aquatic Park. Learn about the history of this urban waterway\, human use\, and the wildlife of the park. During this walk you will learn about the water monitoring and mitigation measures the Aquatic Park Stewards have been undertaking with UC Berkeley students\, City of Berkeley Parks\, Recreation & Waterfront\, and other partners. \nEnjoy seasonal migratory birds visiting as part of the great North American Flyway\, nesting double-crested cormorants\, and the largest heron nursery site in the Bay Area.
