The United States is an important transit hub for shark fin shipments, with fins passing through U.S. ports via air, sea, and land. Some nations in Central America ship as much as one-third to one-half of all their shark fin exports through U.S. ports. In another study, over half the fins in Hong Kong belonged to blue sharks, the same sharks disappearing off the Pacific coastline and threatened in the Atlantic. This is why Shark Stewards supports banning the shark fin trade, reducing fishing of sharks and increasing protected status for species of sharks.
Support Banning the Shark Fin Trade in the US Senate
The companion bill in the Senate to HR 737, the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act (S 793), will next be considered in the Senate. Although we have strong support, we need to urge our Senators in states such as Utah, North Carolina, Alabama and Georgia to support a bill that supports healthy oceans and protects US fisheries. Please share this message and contact your Senator to support the US Shark Fin Trade Ban.
This week the New Jersey Assembly passed another shark fin trade elimination ban. Once signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy. We hope a similar law will pass in Florida, and onward to the US Senate!
On November 19, Shark Stewards helped persuade Federal Fisheries Managers to support the shark and ocean conservation movement by forestalling a proposed Pacific fishery that would kill tens of thousands of sea turtles, seabirds, marine mammals and sharks. We provided written testimony supported by fisheries data and testified in behalf of our 8000 members and 2500 petitioners to block this harmful fishery. Although the PFMC waffled, they did not approve further scoping to allow this fishery to be permitted. We will maintain vigilance to protect our coastal sharks and the sharks that migrate into international waters.
On December 3rd we are participating in a Giving Tuesday campaign to support our chapter work in Indonesia, Singapore and Shenzhen China. Learn more about Shark Stewards and how you can be a part of the solution to save sharks.
As part of the Earth Island Institute, Shark Stewards fights for sharks and ocean health. Your tax deductible contributions can be doubled by Facebook or Paypal on Giving Tuesday starting at 5am PST/8am EST, but matching funds run out early!
These funds provide critical logistical support and travel to directly save sharks from the shark fin trade at the major trade hubs in Singapore and Guangzhou China, and protecting sharks and habitat in SE Asia.
Learn about my story, and about our work with the Sharkwater Team at UCLA. Together we will save sharks and protect ocean health. Join me at one of our California events, or host a Shark screening near you!
