Dear Shark Volunteers,
We have many exciting projects in 2021 that I would like to share and ask for your involvement. Until we are able to return to SE Asia, we have a few core programs of focus at home and would like to refresh the team and connect with new and old volunteers.
Save the Date- Team Zoom and Bad Movie Contest Join me January 28 on our first get together to connect by zoom and re-engage.
We will host a zoom next Thursday January 28 at 7PM pairing volunteers with duties, including grant research etc. You are welcome to attend, and we will host another Bad Movie Night competition. In advance, attached is a list of needs we are seeking to pair volunteers with projects.

At home we are working to protect sharks and the California public from chumming and fishing along public beaches and piers. Kelly and others been working on recreational shark attraction and catch we are building into a regulation this year. This is in the data mining phase and we need volunteers to keep gathering data and build partnerships. We are also continuing the MPA program working to expand marine protection in the San Francisco Bay.
In year seven leading the Golden Gate MPA region, we are developing four statewide online training modules for docents and ambassadors, patterned after the outreach developed here in the Bay Area. If you are interested in participating, you can join me for a working call this week. Our goal is o bring the MPAS into the San Francisco Bay meeting the 30% by 2030 goals.
We will also continue our volunteer MPA dives collecting observations and having fun.
IN THE CAPITOL
On a national level we will work with sponsors to re institute the Federal Shark Fin Sales Elimination act (killed by Marco Rubio) in the next congress. We will also be reintroducing the west coast gillnet ban that is killing thousands of sharks, a bill vetoed by President Trump.
On the upside, President Biden signed an Executive order restoring protection to our marine national monuments protecting some of our healthiest shark habitat and populations!
JOIN THE TEAM!
