What: A recent Executive Order calls to fast track seabed mining in International and U.S. waters.
The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is requesting public comment on a proposal for deep sea mining in American Samoa waters and economic zone.
Sample Comment:
Mining in American Samoa waters poses irreversible harm to ancient marine ecosystems, vital marine life (including corals, whales and fish), major tuna fisheries economy and culture.
The irrepairable harm and other unforseen consequences associated with damaging these fragile marine ecosystems is not worth the risk. Neighboring Pacific Islander marine ecosystems, and waters would be threatened.
I strongly oppose deep sea mining in American Samoa waters.
The Ocean supports Life itself. There are too many unkonwns about the impacts of Deep Sea Mining. What we do know is that scientists predict that we will only recover 3% of new rare earth metals from intensive deep sea mining in the next ten years if we proceed as projected.
As Sir David Attenborough so eloquently states “If we save the Ocean, we save the Planet.”
