In February and March 2013, Shark Stewards participated in submitting separate petitions to list the Northwest Atlantic populations of dusky shark and great hammerhead shark as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

In April and May 2013, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) concluded that a listing may be warranted for both NW Atlantic and global populations of dusky and great hammerhead sharks and has been conducting status reviews for each species to decide whether to formally propose a listing.
While we are awaiting NMFS’s decision, we are working to increase public and political support for a listing. Shark Stewards is joining the National Resource Defense Council to urge NMFS to protect these sharks and support for the listings.
