Since 2006 Shark Stewards has been a leader in reducing the shark fin trade and raising awareness about the plight of sharks.
We are supporting banning the trade in Nevada and in the USA.
Send Email in support of stopping the trade of threatened and endangered shark fins.
Shark finning is the abhorrent and wasteful practice of cutting off a shark’s fins and discarding thebody, often still alive, back into the ocean to drown or bleed to death. The shark fin trade in the U.S. contributes to plummeting shark populations across the world.
The National Marine Fisheries Service Fisheries Statistics and Economics Division indicate that nearly 15,000 tons of shark fins were exported from the US to mainland China in 2014. Although the US is a minor part of the global trade, shark fin exports to China have increased adding to the overall threat to sharks survival.
Shark finning is illegal in US waters, but fins from sharks finned on the high seas, caught illegally or unsustainably by other nations can still be imported into Nevada and sold overseas. Many countries do not have laws against shark finning laws, or like Mexico do not enforce them, and shark finners or unregulated shark fisheries are profiting by trading through US ports. Help stop the slaughter by reducing the demand for this unnecessary luxury and helping halt the shark fin trade.
Rhode Island Becomes the 11th State to Ban Sale of Shark Fins January 2017, making 11 US States to have shark fin trade restrictions.
In a bill initially co-sponsored by Shark Stewards with HSUS and again by Oceana, Texas joined 9 other US states, banning the sale and trade of shark fin in 2015.
Texas had recently emerged as a hub for shark fins, with the state’s fin trade growing by 240 percent since 2010, after the passage of similar fin trade bans in California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Oregon and Washington. 3 US Territories (Guam, Commonwealth of Marianas Islands and American Samoa) also have shark fin trade bans.
