Today President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order proclaiming the first Sanctuary for Sharks in US waters. Under Executive Order EO 14396, Preserving America’s Sharks, the President signed into law the San Francisco Bay as the first Shark Sanctuary in US Waters.
In a reversal of opinion, Mr. Trump signed into law full protection of sharks, banning fishing and restoring habitat in the San Francisco Bay. He said watching a documentary with his friend Steven Miller influenced his decision.
“They are perfect predators. Nobody loves sharks as much as I do. I just love ’em,” said the President, flashing the order, before handing it to the grinning Miller.
The President formerly tweeted “Sharks are last on my list – other than perhaps the losers and haters of the World!” while watching Shark Week with his friend Stormy Daniels in 2013, and another “@trumpcasinos serves #sharkfinsoup and @realDonaldTrump could be a hero and stop it! You like sharks?”. In 2024 he stated a preference for electrocution over shark attacks, citing a fear of sharks and a “lotta shark attacks”.
“Sharks are the best. They keep the ocean healthy. Im a big fan! @realDonaldTrump posted on his Truth Social.” Following watching the film Saving Nemo. “Sharks are Friends Not Food” The President added.
“The San Francisco Bay feeds the ocean around it. The Bay is critical habitat for at least 14 species of sharks and rays, including nursery areas for leopard sharks, soupfin sharks, sevengill sharks and several species of rays. Pollution and fishing are affecting not just sharks, but the health of the bay and coastal ocean,” said David McGuire, Director of the non-profit Shark Stewards. “We welcome increased shark and marine protections that are currently being overturned by the Administration.”
“Obama didnt do it, Biden didnt do it. Only I could do it!” posted the President.
Following the press conference the President approved a plan by the Secretary of Commerce Doug Burgum to share some of California’s white sharks to rebuild the population off the Strait of Hormuz.
