Shark Steward’s Ren Hampton Gives Voice for the ESA
Dear Supporter,
The ocean’s wildlife are losing their voice.
Right now, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries are moving to strip away the core protections of the Endangered Species Act—the very safety net that has saved 99% of the species under its care.
The threat is specific and immediate: They want to remove the “Blanket Rule” (Section 4(d)). If this passes on December 22, a species listed as “Threatened” will no longer receive automatic protection. They could be fished, harmed, or harassed while bureaucrats debate the “economic cost” of saving them.
This is a death sentence for species like the Oceanic Whitetip, Soupfin Shark and Scalloped Hammerhead.
That is why we launched the Voices of Extinction campaign. We are mobilizing to flood the USFWS and NMFS with public comments and sending our team directly to Washington D.C. to lobby Congress against these rollbacks.
But we cannot get there without you.
For our end of year we have set a goal of $10,000 to fund this emergency advocacy work. We are currently 10% of the way there.
Here is exactly how your donation fights extinction today:
$50 – The Student Advocate: Sponsors one Ocean Academy student to testify at hearings for protecting marine sanctuaries and the California coast from oil development in 2026.
$100 – The Shark Watcher: Deploys an ambassador for our Shark Watch program to collect the data needed to prove these species exist and need protection.
$250 – The Story Teller Funds editing and using existing network and footage to communicate threats to endangered species of sharks.
$500 – The Lobbyist: Covers travel costs for one Shark Steward to meet legislators in D.C. and oppose stripping wildlife protection in 2026.
$1,000 – The Legal Defender: Contributes to our legal defense fund to challenge the ESA amendments in court with the Earth Island Advocates.
We have until December 22 to stop this. Silence is not an option.
