Putting the Blue Into Black Friday

Make Black Friday Blue by Getting Wet, Buying Less

November 29 Newsletter

If you can’t get into the ocean today, we can all help protect it by buying less and reducing plastic pollution and carbon emissions on this national day of over-consumption. Inspired by my friends at Marin SCUBA Club who dive on Black Friday, I’ll be taking an ocean plunge in gratitude for all the ocean gives to us, and buying nothing on Black Friday. Shark Stewards is grateful to all the volunteers (including Lily Byrne featured below), our supporters and sister organizations dedicated to protecting marine habitat and endangered marine species like sea turtles and the oceanic whitetip shark, that is receiving more protection under the Endangered Species Act.
Over 95% of these charismatic sharks have been fished out of the global ocean. Let’s roll up our wetsuit sleeves and get to work saving and protecting endangered species!

Atlantic Tuna Commission Fails to Protect Sharks
Atlantic Tuna Commission Fails to Protect Sharks The annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), held in Cyprus November 11-18, ended with a failure to close loopholes allowing shark finning in Atlantic fisheries. Despite a building consensus to increase shark protection, China and Japan again blocked the proposal to require landing sharks with fins attached. This loophole allows for more sharks killed, the take of protected species, and inhibits accurate data collection on catch. Additionally, the fisheries management organization increased quotas for bigeye tuna, and reduced restrictions on Fisheries Aggregating Devices. On a positive note, the UK won a two-year effort to ban retention and promote the safe release of manta and devil rays. Tuna and billfish gear are responsible for a large amount of shark bycatch. Requiring zero-retention, and landing sharks with fins-attached in these large industrial fisheries will reduce shark bycatch and better protect endangered sharks like whale sharks, manta rays and oceanic whitetips
