Bio Blitz Aquatic Park
June 28, 2017 @ 1:45 am - 4:00 pm
Join Shark Stewards with the California Academy of Sciences in a Bio Blitz- survey. This citizen science project is helping to better understand the marine life and the ecological health of Aquatic Park Cove.
Lead by Shark Stewards Viktoria Kuehn, the event is fun, informational and free.
In support of the Snapshot Cal Coast initiative, join Shark Stewards and the S.F. Maritime National Park Service for a grassroots, smartphone-powered bioblitz to record every intertidal species we observe in Aquatic Park Cove.
A bioblitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location. We’ll look along the sandy beach, intertidal rockwork, and pier pilings for crabs, sea stars, shorebirds, fish, barnacles, and anything else you see! In addition to the one day bioblitz, this project will help Shark Stewards create a species list for Aquatic Park Cove, the data will inform research, and management efforts in this unique setting. Although the bioblitz is taking place at a specific time, community members, scientists, students, and local beach lovers are encouraged to continue to upload observations from Aquatic Park throughout the year.
People of all ages and skill levels are welcome! You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded (or digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll have some local experts on site and field guides that will help with species identification.
The kickoff event for this project happens at low tide on Wednesday, June 28th at 8:45 for about an hour and a half. But feel free to stay and keep bioblitzing all morning! Please email Viktoria Kuehn at [email protected] to RSVP and for additional information.
If you are unable to make it to the event and love Aquatic Park, feel free to add observations to this project post-bioblitz.
