However, the integrity of this system is currently at a crossroads. Newly proposed groundfish rules under the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) threaten to damage fragile marine habitat and alter the balance of species within these protected zones. Perhaps more concerning is the shadow of proposed oil exploration offshore.

The Trump administration’s Department of the Interior is proposing a new 5-Year Offshore Drilling Plan that includes California, the Gulf of Mexico, the previously protected waters off of Florida, and Alaska, including the Alaskan wilderness, where drilling has never been attempted before because of the dangerous risk to sensitive wildlife. Oil spills caused by drilling- like the tragic Deep Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico- will have enduring negative impacts on climate, wildlife and human health. The agency is inviting public comments until Thursday, February 26, 2026.

As a concerned citizen I am writing in strong protest for the proposed opening of federal waters to oil development, exploration off California and in our National Marine Sanctuaries. These areas of high productivity and biodiversity are highly vulnerable to ocean noise, disturbance and risk of spill associated with exploration and oil and gas extraction.
