Sharkwater and the International Ocean Film Festival, San Francisco Action For Sharks Save the Wedgefish Engaging and Inspiring Youth Events ————————————————————— Sharkwater Extinction Opens the International Ocean Film Festival, San Francisco with Shark StewardsIn 2006 Sharkwater opened the world’s eyes to the threats to sharks caused by shark finning. The film motivated activists to rise up and fight shark finning and the devastating shark fin trade. Tragically, Rob died in a diving accident while making this film, but his family and team finished it to continue the fight to save sharks. Join us for opening night March 7 and help us TAKE ACTION FOR SHARKS at the International Ocean Film Festival, San Francisco. Since 2003 Shark Stewards have fought against shark finning and the fin trade. The festival has four days of ocean films, including our 12th annual shark films, followed by a panel on sharks Saturday, March 9. #SavetheWedgefish Largely unrecognized, the giant guitarfish (Rhynchobatus djiddensis), also known as the whitespotted wedgefish is a large species of guitarfish, a type of ray. These beautiful rays are disappearing from Malaysia, Indonesia and other areas of their limited range. These are one of the most sought after elasmobranchs in southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia), with the dorsal fins and upper caudal fin considered to be premium quality with the highest prices. A set of fins from a single individual have been reported to have brought over US$900/lb (Chen 1996). Shark Stewards is joining Shark Research Institute in Sri Lanka to list these disappearing fish in May under CITES Appendix II. Other species considered include shortfin and longfin Mako, and 6 species of guitarfish all endangered by the shark fin trade.
