Our Big Blue Expedition, Saving Sharks and Whales in the Coral Triangle

Shark Stewards announces the launch of an international conservation coalition to support endangered wildlife and habitat in the Coral Triangle.

The seas bounded by Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Indonesia and Australia, the Coral Triangle comprises the highest marine biodiversity in the world.  76% of the world’s coral and more than 3000 species of fish live in this region.

“This is one of the most diverse and fragile of all ocean ecosystem with charismatic species from Blue Whales to hammerhead sharks,” said David McGuire, Director of Shark Stewards. Over 350 million people living in the region rely on the fish and the health of these diverse ecosystems, yet this fragile biodiversity is at risk to reef destruction, overfishing and habitat loss.”

Shark Stewards, Stop Fish Bombing, APEX Environmental, and leading underwater media company Scubazoo of a new global awareness campaign in support of endangered wildlife and habitat in the two countries.

Fish bombing (aka blast fishing) reef damage, overfishing, oil exploration and shark finning are threatens the ecological and economic balance of this region. The team is planning a 2018 expedition from Sabah Malaysia to Timor Leste filming, tracking endangered species and applying new technology to protect them.

Shark Stewards at Speakeasy

In partnership with MWExperiences, the team is hosting Our Big Blue, a special launch and fundraising party New Year’s Eve at the Lincoln Speakeasy in Los Angeles, to support our mission and launch a research and documentary expedition in 2018. I am requesting a donation of a gift certificate, product or experience for our silent auction to support this event.

“Our goal is to help save endangered marine species like blue whales by creating a unique experience to help drive awareness and inspire all global citizens to share their voice and take action,” said Marisa Wong, Founder/Managing Director, MWExperiences. “Working alongside some of the world’s most renowned experts in their field, Shark Stewards, Stop Fish Bombing, APEX Environmental, and Scubazoo, our team is in place to provide sponsors the opportunity to participate in an experience of a lifetime, while helping preserve wildlife and ecosystems, and creating a unified global movement.”

The coalition is seeking corporate sponsorship and donations to finance the expedition and research; proceeds will cover travel and accommodation for guests, help fund state-of-the-art scientific equipment, as well as filming and production costs, so that the world can see and discover more about conservation of the biodiversity in the region. The first expedition is planned to embark in May 2018 with supporting partners available to join.

Based in San Francisco, Shark Stewards is a Project of the Earth Island Institute working in shark conservation, ocean health and education.  Our mission is to save sharks from the shark fin trade and overfishing by protecting critical marine habitat.
